Roofers Near You
Thankfully, today you have a multitude of options when it comes to roof shingle color. One of the most difficult decisions homeowners make during the reroof process is which shingle color to select. If your home exterior has siding, stone, or shingles, the decision carries a little more weight, as you will not be able to paint your exterior walls to better match a shingle choice. Instead, you’ll want to choose a shingle that matches well with your existing exterior or façade.
Fortunately, at Castle Roofing Group, we have decades of experience guiding our clients in the shingle color selection process. We have created this guide with different factors to consider when making your shingle color selection.
Warm and Cool Colors
One of the most basic concepts in roof shingle color pairing is color warmth. We often recommend pairing warm color shingles with a warm siding or exterior wall color. For example, if your exterior wall color is beige, this will pair nicely with a shade of brown for your roof.
On the other hand, if your exterior wall color is gray or blue, we recommend another cool color for the shingles, such as gray. White is a neutral color that can be paired with any color, cool or warm. Green is another exception. Green siding can be paired with both warm browns and cools greys for shingle color. Keep in mind that the more contrast you create in your color palette, the more dramatic your home will look. If you are hoping to blend in, choose two similar colors in the same color warmth family.
Warm colors: Brown, beige, tan, orange, rust, red, yellow
Cool shingle colors: Gray, black, blue, green
Roof Shingles Darker than House
A general rule of thumb when selecting a shingle color is to choose a shingle that is darker than your wall color. The one exception to this rule is when you live in a hotter climate, like us here in the Orlando area. It is common in more tropical climates to see white, light green and light gray roofs on houses of all colors to reduce heat absorption in the home.
If you are looking for a more traditional, conservative approach, choose a darker shade for your roof. Meanwhile, choose a lighter color roof if you want your home to look fresher and more welcoming. Also keep in mind that if you are in a cold climate, a dark roof helps snow melt more quickly, as it absorbs and retains heat.
House Size and Shingle Color
Another factor when selecting a shingle color is the size of your home. Light colors make homes look larger, while dark shingles can cause homes to appear smaller. If you have a small home that you would like to give a larger appearance, look into a lighter shingle color.
What Color Roof Goes with a Red Brick House?
It can be tricky to pair red brick with a shingle color. Fortunately, we have plenty of experience matching shingle for red brick homes. We prefer a light gray, light brown, or light tan shingle for a more modern look with your red brick home. For a more traditional look, pair your red brick home with a dark gray or black shingle.
House Styles Better Suited for Color Roof
Using a more brightly color shingle (usually green, blue, or rust/terra cotta) is complete up to you, but there are some styles of homes that lend themselves to a more colorful shingle selection. Homes in the Mediterranean, Victorian, or Southwest style, for example, are paired well with color shingle choices. Keep in mind that when you sell your home, conservative colors are safer. You may also need to check with your Homeowners Association (HOA) before selecting a shingle color. However, you can have great results with a well-paired blue, green, or terra cotta colored roof.
Use a Visualizer App
A great tool for selecting a shingle color is a visualizer app. Upload a picture of your home to the app, and once it is digitized, you can select different manufacturer shingles to see how they will look on your actual home. Click here to learn about the Visualizer App from CertainTeed.
