Roofing Orlando
As hurricane season fast approaches, we are all starting to think about what we need to do to get our houses ready. One question we often get is how to prepare one’s roof for a storm.
What do you need to check on your roof, and what are the most important things to actually prepare your roof before a storm?
Here is our list of the top 5 most important things to do for your roof before a storm.
- Get a Roof Inspection
- Take Pictures of Your Roof
- Trim Trees
- Buy a Tarp
- Clean the Gutters
1. Get a Roof Inspection
In Florida, we’re not just worried about a small hole in the roof after a storm. We have seen too many of our friends’ and families’ roofs destroyed in hurricanes, causing need for a total or partial roof replacement. It’s important to get a roof inspection before storm season for two reasons.
First, getting a roof inspection will provide you evidence as to the state of the state of your roof before storm season. This documentation will be helpful if you do need to file a roofing claim.
Secondly, if the roof inspector identifies missing or curling shingles, leaks, or other roof issues, you should have them repaired before the storm. Any point of vulnerability opens your entire roof to further damage in high level hurricane winds and heavy rain.
In Florida, hurricane winds reach 155 miles per hour and higher. It’s essential that your roof is in good condition before the storm comes.
2. Take Pictures of Your Roof
After the roof inspection, take pictures of your roof. Before and after pictures are important when filing a roofing claim. You’ll want to document that your roof is in good condition in order to provide evidence that the storm is what caused damage, in case you need it.
Use an app to time and date stamp your photos. Be sure to take new photos after the storm if your roof has any damage. Also, get a second roof inspection after a major storm if you suspect any damage. It’s important to move quickly when it comes to insurance claims after a storm.
3. Trim Trees
Trim any trees that overhang your roof. Also, annually assess if there are any trees that are too close to your roof that need to be removed.
4. Buy a Tarp
After a storm, it’s often difficult to purchase a tarp in Florida. Buy a large tarp before hurricane season starts and keep it on hand in case you need it during storm season.
5. Clean the Gutters
Cleaning the gutters might not be your favorite way to spend a Saturday, but it’s important to put it on your “To Do” list before storm season. Clearing the gutters of debris allows them to do their job: removing excess runoff water from your roof. Cleaning the gutters is especially important if you have a flat roof or low slope roof over any part of your house. If the gutters are not working properly, excess water can cause water damage to your roof, which means costly repairs down the line.
