Orlando Roof
Today there are more options than ever when it comes to roof materials for your home or commercial building.
Different roofing systems perform better in hot and cold weather. For those of us in the Orlando and Central Florida area, we need to know which roof material can withstand the Florida heat. Here is our breakdown of nine different types of roof materials and how they measure up when it comes to appearance, affordability, and longevity in the Orlando sun.
Types of Roofing
1. Asphalt 3 Tab Shingles
Asphalt 3 Tab is your most common type of roofing material available. It is a great option for affordability, and there are many different colors and manufacturers available. Asphalt 3 tab is characterized by the basic shingle pattern, and is not as long-lasting as the architectural and luxury asphalt shingles. However, asphalt shingle do hold up well in hot climates, as they are engineered to reflect sunlight and heat. Lighter color shingles improve reflectivity and are proven to lower building temperatures.
2. Asphalt Architectural Shingles
Asphalt architectural shingles are known for their pleasing aesthetics when compared to 3 tab shingles. They are also thicker, more durable and therefore have a slightly higher roof cost than 3 tab shingles. However, architectural shingles also last longer and often come with a 30 year manufacturer warranty, so your investment is returned in the long run. You can see in from the images that architectural shingles differ from 3 tab because of the overlapping shingle pattern.
You can choose from several manufacturers for your shingle roof replacement. At Castle Roofing Group we partner with the following shingle manufacturers:
- CertainTeed (Our Preferred Partner)
- GAF
- Owens Corning
- Atlas Roofing
- Tamko
3. Asphalt Luxury Shingles
Asphalt luxury shingles are the longest lasting, highest quality type of asphalt shingle. Because of their increased thickness and appearance, they are also the most expensive type of shingle. Ask your local roofer about luxury shingle options.
4. Clay Tile
Clay tile roofs are one of the best options for appearance, coolness, and longevity in extreme heat. However, they are also more expensive to install than asphalt shingles. Roofing tiles are heavier than other types of roofing, so they often require reinforcement of your roofing structure prior to installation. While they are great for withstanding Florida heat, they do not do well with damage from falling tree branches, as they are prone to cracking and breaking. If you select a tile roof, you will need to set aside an extra budget for roof maintenance to contend with Florida storms. That being said, tile roofing is a beautiful, traditional option.
5. Concrete Tile
Concrete tile is similar to tile roofing in that it also holds up well in the heat and is pleasing visually. Concrete tiles, especially in lighter colors, can reflect up to 75% of the sun’s rays. It is less expensive, more durable, and even longer lasting than traditional clay tile, making it a great option for Florida weather. However, concrete tiles are one of the heaviest roofing materials, so your roof structure will likely need reinforcement before installation.
6. Rolled Roofing
Rolled roofing is a type of asphalt coated roofing material than comes in rolls and is use for flat and low slope roofing systems. Rolled roofing is designed to withstand heat, and the reduced number of junctions makes it ideal to withstand leaks. Rolled roofing is a great, inexpensive option for a low slope roof in Orlando.
7. Standing Seam
Standing seam roofs are a type of metal roof that is designed for residential and commercial roof. It differs from other types of corrugated metal roofing, which are used primarily in agriculture, because of its attractive appearance and longevity. Metal roofs do reflect heat, making them a good choice for Florida weather. However, there are some disadvantages to metal roofing, including higher cost.
8. Wooden Shakes
Wooden shakes are another beautiful, traditional shingle option. However, they are uncommon for Central Florida and Orlando roofing because they do require much more maintenance than other roofing materials, especially in our hot and humid climate. Humidity causes algae and wood rot, so you will need regular maintenance if you select a wooden shingle roof. They also carry a higher materials and installation cost than an asphalt shingle roof.
9. Slate
Slate roofing is known as the “forever” roof, as it can outlive its owner. Slate shingles are very durable. They can last 100 years or longer with maintenance. Keep in mind, the weight of the shingles may require maintenance to your roof structure over time. This cool, durable roof material can withstand high heat and is a more expensive but legitimate option for Central Florida roofs.
Roofing for Orlando Weather
Our top picks for roofing for Orlando weather are architectural asphalt shingles and rolled roofing for low slope roof systems. These types of roofing deliver great value for their longevity. When you select lighter, Energy Star certified roof colors, asphalt shingles also rival all other types of roof materials for reduction to your energy bill.
