Asphalt Shingles
One of the most common types of roof shingles is asphalt shingles. Asphalt Shingles for roofs are the most cost-effective solution for homeowners. Asphalt shingle roofs are one of the most popular and affordable styles of roofing.

- Many types of asphalt shingles meet Energy Star standards. This allows you to save on energy bills.
Unfortunately, one of the disadvantages of asphalt shingles is they don’t hold up very well in locations where the temperature suddenly fluctuates. When this occurs, it will cause the shingles to become brittle. Asphalt shingles might break in moderate climates, but this is less likely. Keep in mind that asphalt shingles they can only be used on a roof with a steep slope.
Fiberglass Shingles

Three-Tab Shingles & Architectural Shingles
Three-tab shingles are a type of asphalt roof shingle style. Three-tab roof shingles create the typical rectangular shingle style that is common on top of American homes. They create a one-dimensional style laid flat. Architectural roof shingles contain a premium form of asphalt shingle. There are a few differences between three-tab and architectural shingles:
- Three-tab shingles are one-dimensional while architectural shingles are dimensional
- Three- tab shingles are less expensive from architectural shingles
- Architectural shingles last longer, look better, and are more resistant to high winds
- Architectural shingles can be made to look like wood, shake, slate and tile.
- Architectural shingles aren’t made with cutouts, but three-tab shingles are.
- Architectural shingles have more asphalt, which gives it more curves than three tab
- Architectural shingles are waterproof but not recommended for roofs with a low slope – roof’s susceptibility to wind-driven rain.
Slate Shingles
A durable type of roof shingle is slate shingles. Slate shingles can last between 80 to 100 years. When it comes to slate shingles, the materials are heavy.
